Evan Everett received the B.Eng degree in Wireless Engineering and the B.S. degree in Physics from Auburn University in 2010, both with highest honors. He received the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 2012, and completed his PhD in May 2016. His research focued on theory and design for full-duplex wireless communication. He received the 2010 Comer Award for Excellence in Physical Science from Auburn University, and he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow.
Lin Zhong received his B.S. and M.S. from Tsinghua University and PhD from Princeton University. His research interests include mobile & embedded systems, human factors, and nanoelectronics. In addition, he leads the Efficient Computing Group to make computing, communication, and interfacing more efficient and effective. Their recent research focus has been on mobile and embedded systems.
Ashu Sabharwal (IEEE Fellow) received his B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi in 1993, M.S. and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1995 and 1999, respectively. He is the founder and lead PI of the WARP project. His current research interests are in full-duplex wireless, especially experiment-driven design and theoretical foundations. In addition, he continues to work on developing the foundations of local-view capacity.
Xu Zhang is a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University. He is a member of the Rice Network Group (RNG) led by Dr. Edward W. Knightly. His research focuses on wireless networking, TV White Space and MIMO technique. He received my Bachelor of Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2012. As an undergraduate he studied physics for two years, followed by two years of study in electrical engineering.
Pablo Salvador received his B.Sc. degree in Telecommunication Engineering from University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) in 2010, and his M.Sc. in telematics engineering from the same university in 2011. He has collaborated in several national and European funded projects (POSEIDON, INTERSAFE-2 and FLAVIA). He was awarded as nationwide finalist of the Telematics Association for his B.Sc. project. Pablo is currently working on his Ph.D. at the Institute IMDEA Networks. His research interest focuses on the design and experimental assesment of new schemes for real time traffic in 802.11 wireless networks.
Oscar Bejarano received his B.S. degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, his MS degree from Rice University, Houston, Texas, in 2011, and his PhD degree from Rice University, Houston, Texas, in 2015, all in Electrical Engineering. His current research interests span Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol design for multi-antenna systems including MU-MIMO and virtual MISO networks.
Patrick has worked on WARP from the beginning. As a graduate student, and later as project manager, in Rice's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Patrick helped conceive and build WARP. He designed the first generation of WARP hardware, implemented WARP's MIMO OFDM physical layer transceivers and helped manage all the engineering and support activities of the Rice WARP team. He finished his PhD in 2010 (with a thesis full of experiments on WARP, of course). Since 2010 Patrick has worked at Mango Communications (which he founded) full-time, most recently completing the hardware design of WARP v3 and the FMC-RF-2X245 and FMC-BB-4DA FMC modules.
Ardalan Amiri Sani is a Ph.D. candidate at Rice University. He received his B.S. from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran in 2008 and his M.S. from Rice in 2011. His current research is on building systems for virtualizing I/O devices in computer systems of various form factors, from smartphones to servers. After completing his PhD, Ardalan accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of California - Irvine.
Clayton Shepard is a Ph.D. candidate at Rice University, where he also completed his B.S. in 2008, and M.S. in 2012. He is a member of the Rice Efficient Computing Group, lead by Dr. Lin Zhong. In 2008 he was a visiting researcher with Motorola's Advanced Research and Technology lab, where he also interned in 2007. His research interests include mobile systems and ubiquitous low-power computing, his current research focus is many-antenna base stations. In 2011 and 2012 he interned with Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent. He received the NDSEG fellowship award in 2011.
Thomas Nitsche graduated from Technische Universität München in 2009 with a Diploma degree in Computer Sciences. He worked at Nokia Siemens Networks and was Ph.D. Student at the Chair for Network Architectures and Services at Technische Universität München. In 2012 he joined IMDEA Networks, as PhD student and is currently visiting Rice Networks Group to work on mm-Wave WiFi under the guidance of Dr. Edward Knightly.
Sharan Naribole is pursuing his Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Edward Knightly, Rice Networks Group. He received his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 2012. His current research interest lies in the area of Heterogeneous and Small Cell Networks. His graduate studies are supported through Texas Instruments Graduate Fellowship.
Adriana B. Flores is an Alumnus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, Houston, Texas. In 2016, she received her PhD in electrical engineering, and in 2013, she received her M.S. in electrical engineering from Rice University. In 2009, she received her B.S. in electrical engineering from ITESM in Monterrey, Mexico. She joined the Rice Networks Group in 2011, where she worked under the guidance of Dr. Edward Knightly and held a Texas Instruments Distinguished Fellowship. Her research focused on the design of medium access control protocols for efficient channel usage in wireless networks.
Melissa received her PhD in 2012 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University working under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Sabharwal.
She received her M.Sc. from Rice University in May 2007 and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia in May 2005.
Siddharth received his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering at Rice University under Dr. Ashutosh Sabharwal, along the way developing the second generation of WARP hardware to allow network-wide experimentation.
He received my Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering at Rice University, with a concentration in communication systems.
He is also a proud graduate of the Mahindra United World College of India, where he attended high school.
His current sport of choice is squash. In his free time he enjoys tinkering with hardware, and building CNC-milled racetracks via Ponoko and model kits.
Jian Cao received her B.S. from Nankai University with a focus on Optical Information Science and Technology. She is working on her M.S. at Rice University, with a research focus on developing mobile apps, learning algorithms and portable devices for physical/behavioral sensing. Her work combines cutting-edge technologies in statistical machine learning, digital signal processing and software engineering to provide next-generation healthcare to the masses.
Xu Du completed his Bachelors in Information Technology in 2013, from Zhejiang University, spending a semester at UCLA in 2012. He then came to Rice University, joining Dr. Ashutosh Sabharwal's group and completing his MS in 2015. He is currently working on his PhD, with a focus on Wireless Communication.
Behnaam Aazhang received his B.S. (with highest honors), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1981, 1983, and 1986, respectively. His research interests are in the areas of communication theory, information theory, and their applications with emphasis on wireless communications, cellular mobile radio networks, and wireless local area networks. He founded the Rice Center for Multimedia Communications and was its director from 1998-2006. He is an IEEE Fellow.
Yijun Qiao is a graduate student in Professor Edward Knightly's Rice Networks Group. He received his Bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 2012. His current research interest lies in the area of distributed MIMO and Visible Light Communications. His graduate studies are supported through Texas Instruments Graduate Fellowship.
Sadia Quadri is a Research Engineer in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She received her M.S. from Lancaster University, England and her B.S. from Bangalore University, India. Prior to joining Rice, she worked as a Senior Research Engineer at Toshiba Research Laboratory in England. Here she gained extensive industrial experience and collaborated in many European projects. Her area of expertise is implementation of novel algorithms for wireless networks. She has been awarded six patents, three of which have been filed internationally in USA, Japan and the United Kingdom. Her research interests include prototyping, Wireless Communications (PHY and MAC design), and Cognitive Radio Networking, specifically techniques for radio resource management.
Edward Knightly is the Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of California at Berkeley and his B.S. from Auburn University. He is an IEEE Fellow, a Sloan Fellow, and a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He received the best paper award from ACM MobiCom 2008 and serves on the IMDEA Networks Scientific Council.
Corina I. Ionita received her Diploma Engineer from Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania and her M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 2007 and in 2011. She has been a research intern with Nokia technology Platforms in Oulu Finland and with Texas Instruments in Dallas during the summers of 2010 and 2013 respectively. Since 2011 she has been a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University. Her research interests include signal processing at the physical layer, cooperative relaying protocols and coding for wireless networks.
She received the Loewenstern Scholarship in Engineering in 2008, the Harianna Butler Scholarship in 2012, best graduate poster award in the 2011 ECE Affiliates Annual Meeting, and the best screech award in flight ìEngineering in Connectivityî, in the 2013 SCREECH competition.
She has been an active member of the ExCEL Women in Engineering group at Rice University since 2008, holding positions such as president, vice-president and others.
Achaleshwar Sahai graduated with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in January 2014 with a thesis titled "Wireless Full-Duplex: From Practice to Theory". He loves to collect, solve and motivate people to solve interesting puzzles. Sahai spent his undergraduate years in Chennai at IITM. As a graduate student, he has enjoyed working at the fringe of theory and experiments in the realm of communications.
Noha Helal is currently pusuing her Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Edward Knightly, Rice Networks Group. She received her B.Sc. degree from the faculty of engineering, Alexandria University, Egypt in 2010. She then received her master's degree from the wireless intelligent networking center, Nile University, Egypt in 2012. Her current research focuses on mutiple input multiple output networks and visible light communications.
Jingwen Bai is currently working toward her Ph.D. at Rice under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Sabharwal. Her focus is wireless communication and information theory and her research area includes both the theoretical analysis and experiment characterization of advanced interference management via mobile-to-mobile communication. She received her M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University in 2013 and received her B.E. degree in Electronic Science and Technology from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing, China, in 2011.
Samantha R. Summerson received her B.A. degree with honors in Applied Mathematics from the University of California-Berkeley in 2006, the M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 2010, and her PhD in May 2014. After graduation, Samantha continued on to a Neuroengineering post-doctoral position at the University of California - Berkeley.
Shuqiao Jia received a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, in 2012. She is working toward the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, Houston, TX. Her primary research interests are wireless communication and full-duplex MIMO communication.
Brett Kaufman received a B.A. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (with high honors) in 2006 from Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. In 2008, he worked as a seasonal research trainee at Nokia Technology Platforms in Oulu, Finland. He received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 2009. The focus of his doctoral research has been developing spectrally efficient wireless networks with heavy emphasis on D2D communication, femtocell networks, and self-interference cancellation for full-duplex communication.
David Ramirez received his B.S. from Tecnologico de Monterrey in 2009 and received his M.S. in 2012 and Ph.D. in 2017 from Rice University. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. His research projects relate to resource allocation in large wireless networks. His recent focus has been in wireless communication systems with compute-and-forward relays using lattice codes to enable higher network density and more efficient use of wireless resources.
Rakesh Malladi received a Dual Degree (B.Tech and M.Tech) in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 2011. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering at Rice University. He worked in IBM India Research Labs, Bangalore and Texas Instruments, Dallas during the summers of 2010 and 2013 respectively. His research interests are in the area of signal processing and machine learning with a focus on time series data analysis to learn the epileptic brain connectivity.
Ryan E. Guerra is a Ph.D. student with Dr. Knightly's Networks Group. His interests lie in wireless communication, hardware design, and network planning and operations. Specifically, he develops a system for opportunistic reuse of TV spectrum white spaces. He actively develops a cognitive radio hardware and software platform based on the software-defined radio WARP in addition to serving as network manager for the Rice TFA community wireless network.
Narendra Anand is a Ph.D. student at Rice University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a member of the Rice Networks Group working with Dr. Edward Knightly. His research focus is in Wireless Networking. Specifically, he is currently exploring Cross-Layer, Multi-User Beamforming techniques.
Gaurav was the WARP Project Manager and Scalable Health Research Engineer at the Center for Multimedia Communication, Rice University. He holds a Master's degree in electrical engineering from University of California, Irvine. His quest into engineering started because of an interest in electronic gadgets as a child. Research is his passion and he embraces the uncertainty associated with it. Gaurav’s interests lie in the fields of wireless communication, image processing, machine vision and recently mobile health-care; digital signal processing being at the center of all. His current research efforts focus on solving some of the healthcare issues in Respiratory Care using mobile devices. Gaurav enjoys cricket, racing and singing. He is currently the Chief Technical Officer at Cognita Labs.
Qiong Huang worked under the guidance of Ashutosh Sabharwal. She is interested in action/activity recognition, gaze tracking, machine learning, behavior imaging, computer vision system design and its applications in health. She received her B.S. in Electronic Information Science and Technology from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2008 and her MS at Rice University in 2015.
Richard Latimer received his undergraduate degree from Rice University and is now pursuing his Ph.D. His research interests are in mobile computing and how to take existing systems and interface them for new applications. As a hobby, he likes to dabble in different web technologies. He enjoys reading TechCrunch and Technology Review. As a past-president of Rice's student IEEE chapter, he helped open the Dr. Bill Wilson IEEE lounge.
Rajoshi Biswas is a third year graduate student at Rice University and her area of research is Mobile Healthcare. She received her B.E. (hons.) in Electronics and Instrumentation from Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, India and completed her M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University. She developed an interest in electronics during her undergraduate years while working on exciting multidisciplinary projects to develop analog circuits to solve problems in Neural Networks, VLSI System Design and Computer Vision. She had the opportunity to take it one step further by delving into the world of health and building smart devices to solve challenging behavioral problems in personal health care. Her passion for exercise led her to be among the developers of OWLympics, a successful exercise program for Rice University that promotes fitness as a regular habit. She is also deeply in love with music and dance and has been performing live from the age of four.
Mayank Kumar received his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) in 2010 and came to Rice in 2012. He has received Texas Instruments Fellowship for his ongoing graduate studies. His current research interests are non-contact measurement of vital signs, Quantified Self, and data analytics for physiological signals.
Aida Vosoughi received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic), Tehran, Iran in 2006, and 2008, respectively. She received her M.S. in electrical engineering from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at North Dakota State University, Fargo, ND in 2010. Vosoughi started her Ph.D. studies in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University, Houston, TX in 2011. She is currently a research assistant in the VLSI signal processing group at ECE Department of Rice University under the supervision of Professor Joseph Cavallaro. Her research interests include VLSI design for high performance wireless transceivers, data encryption and compression, hardware/software co-design, reconfigurable computing, and security of cognitive radio networks.
Michael Wu received his B.S. degree from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in May of 2007 and his M.S. degree from Rice University in May of 2010, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the ECE department at Rice University. His research interests are wireless algorithms, software defined radio on GPGPU and other parallel architectures, and high performance wireless receiver designs.
Bei Yin received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Beijing University of Technology, Beijing, China, in 2002, and his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, in 2005. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, Houston, Texas. His research interests include VLSI signal processing and wireless communications. Bei is currently working at Qualcomm.
Guohui Wang received his B.S. in E.E. from Peking University, Beijing, China, and M.S. in CS from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, and completed his PhD at Rice University in 2015. His adviser was Dr. Cavallaro and he worked in the CMC and VLSI signal processing group. His research interests are parallel algorithms and VLSI architecture for wireless communication systems, and parallel computing for signal processing on mobile systems using emerging platforms such as multi-core CPU and GPGPU. Guohui is currently a researcher at Qualcomm in the GPU Compute Solution team.
Kaipeng Li received his B.S. degree in Physics (Major: Microelectronics) from Nanjing University, China, in 2013. He started his Ph.D. studies in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Rice University, Houston, TX in 2013, and he is currently a research assistant in the VLSI signal processing group under the supervision of Professor Joseph Cavallaro. His research interests include VLSI design for wireless communication, software-defined radio system and GPGPU accelerated communication systems.
Joseph R. Cavallaro is the Director of the Center for Multimedia Communications. In August 1988, he joined the faculty of Rice University, Houston, Texas, where he is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and by courtesy in the Department of Computer Science. He is also Associate Director of the Center for Multimedia Communication at Rice. Professor Joe Cavallaro's research is in special-purpose VLSI processor architectures. Advances in VLSI technology have made possible the implementation of special-purpose processors for signal processing, computer graphics, and robotics. Many of these applications involve a core group of matrix computations that can be efficiently performed on parallel arrays of functional units. In particular, important numerical algorithms for wireless communication systems can greatly benefit from enhanced parallel architectures and high-speed computer arithmetic. These algorithms and their efficient mapping to low-power architectures are studied on DSP, ASIC, and Application-specific Instruction Processors (ASIP).
Chao Xu received his B.S. from Tsinghua University, China in 2011. He is currently pursuing his M.S. and Ph.D. at Rice University. His research interest are in improving performance of software on mobile devices and debugging techniques. He has recently worked on improving energy efficiency of operating system on mobile SoC.
Eddie Reyes received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 2012 and is currently pursuing his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at Rice University as well. The current focus of his research is in developing support for concurrent, efficient access to camera hardware in mobile devices.
Felix Xiaozhu Lin received his M.S. in Computer Science (2008) and B.S. in Automation (2006), both from Tsinghua University, Beijing. Currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Rice, he has focused on building mobile systems for backing people’s ever-increasing (and sometimes unreasonable) demands: lightning fast UI, always-on devices, long-lasting battery, etc.
Kevin Boos received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2011 and is currently pursuing his M.S. and Ph.D. at Rice University. The focus of his research is designing and developing systems software for next-generation mobile devices. Recently, he has worked on support for energy-efficient resource sharing between mobile devices, primarily for I/O peripherals via virtualization.
Min Hong Yun joined Rice 2012. He received his B.S. and M.S. from Korea University in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Before he joined Rice, he worked in Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) as a senior researcher for nine years. Currently, his research interests are in mobile system software from OS to application. He is especially in reducing user-perceived latency less than 10 ms on mobile devices.
Robert LiKamWa received his B.S. and M.S. from Rice University in 2010 and 2012 respectively and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. His research projects relate to building systems with smartphone sensors to efficiently understand users and their environments. His recent focus has been in Continuous Mobile Vision, providing systems the capability to capture and comprehend video frames under a tight energy budget.
Zhen Wang received his B.E. from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2009 and M.S. from Rice University in 2012. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Rice University. His research interests are in the performance and efficiency of web browsing and operating systems for mobile devices. He has recently worked on utilizing heterogeneous hardware on mobile System-on-Chip (SoC) for browser rendering and operating system.
Jie Liao received his B.S. from University of Science and Technology of China in Electronic Science and Technology in 2013. He is currently a first-year Ph.D. student, pursing his M.S. and Ph.D. at Rice University. Recently he has been working on ELEC599, the first year graduate student project, supervised by Dr. Lin Zhong. The project is mainly on building OS support for DSPs on mobile SoCs.
Kaipeng Li received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and B.S. in Mathematics from Louisiana Tech University in 2014. His research interests focus on wireless technologies.
Jian Ding completed her bachelors in Information Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2014. She started at Rice in 2014, joining Dr. Zhong's Rice Efficient Computing Group in 2015. Her research focuses on wireless communication (Massive MIMO).
Xing Zhang joined Rice after completing his BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Electronic Science and Technology in 2013.
Andrew Kwong joined Rice after completing his BS in Biomedical Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2014. He came to Rice with previous internship experience at Johns Hopkins University and BSAC. He completed his M.S. at Rice University in 2016.
Pu Dong received his BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014, making the Dean's List each semester. He joined Dr. Lin Zhong's RECG group, focusing on low-level operating systems and embedded systems.
Abeer Javed earned his BS from Rice University in 2014 before joining the Rice ECE graduate program. He works in Dr. Lin Zhong's RECG group.
Kumail Haider joined Rice University after completing a BS in Electrical Engineering from the School of Science and Engineering, LUMS. He received his MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2015 under the supervision of Dr. Edward Knightly. His research is in the broad area of wireless networking and MAC design, with a focus on 60 GHz networks.
Peschal Nayak graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, with a B Tech in Electrical Engineering. He joined Rice University in 2014, earning an MS in Wireless Networks in 2016. He is currently working under Dr. Edward Knightly. His research interests are in the areas of mobile and wireless networks with a focus on protocol design and performance evaluation coupled with at-scale field trials.
